This was Scotland's first win at Wembley in 18 years thanks to a goal from Don Hutchinson. The scoreline could have been worse had it not been for wonderful goalkeeping by David Seaman.

After an excellent win at Hampden Park 4 days earlier this was a disappointing display by England. The home side did not have one shot on target for the whole 90 minutes. The closest England came to scoring was when Scholes pounced on an error made by Hendry but Saturday's hero's shot went into the side-netting. However they did have a goal disallowed after 34 minutes when Shearer was judged to have fouled Sullivan. To the dismay of the crowd Owen's header did not give England the lead.

After 39 minutes of play Scotland were celebrating when Hutchinson headed the ball into England's net. England's defenders were caught off-guard, McCann beating Campbell on the wing who crossed the ball to Hutchinson who beat Adams. England went into the half-time break with much to discuss as they trailed to Scotland.

In the second half Hendry again made a mistake but Shearer failed to make the most of this opportunity when he blazed the ball over the crossbar. Owen was denied moments later by a great tackle by Collins. Then Scotland almost had a second goal when Seaman failed to keep hold of the ball after a free-kick by Hutchinson but he managed to grab the ball at the second attempt to prevent Dailly scoring.

England could not find a way back into this match and conceded defeat to Scotland. They will now have much work to do before next summer's final after this uninspiring performance.
